North Carolina Officer Killed in Truck Accident

In Nov. 2014, a North Carolina police officer was killed while on duty. The Union County Sheriff stated that the truck accident death was the first time a deputy from his department had ever died on the job. The tragedy is said to have occurred on Highway 74 in Monroe.

The deceased officer was recently honored in a memorial service held at a church in New Bern. At the time of the accident, he was 54 years old. According to reports, a tractor-trailer flipped over and landed on top of the officer’s squad car, resulting in his death.

Other fallen officers were also honored in the Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony, including one who had been shot during a manhunt for a murder suspect. The North Carolina Attorney General joined law enforcement officials from across the state to pay tribute to the officers who have died in the line of duty. Judge Marion Warren was listed as a keynote speaker at the service.

It is unfortunate when any North Carolina resident is killed in a truck accident or other incident caused by the negligent or wrongful actions of another person. It might be of comfort for immediate family members who survive the untimely death of a loved one in a fatal accident to know that they may be able to seek restitution by filing a wrongful death claim in a civil court. Moreover, workers’ compensation death benefits may also be applicable when the victim was working at the time of the accident. Though a civil lawsuit is by no means expected to alleviate the grief a family suffers in the aftermath of a loved one’s death, the compensation awarded in a successfully litigated claim can help to absorb costs associated with funeral expenses or medical bills that might have been incurred during treatment of a loved one before he or she succumbed to injuries.
